In film it's called the inciting incident, and it draws the audience into the experience. It is present in every form of entertainment that has a story. It is commonly called "the hook," and it engages the audience for the rest of the experience.
My professional focus is on helping to design the hook in games. It gets people excited, it draws them in, and it plays on who they are and what they've experienced. The hook makes use of mystery and anticipation, surprise and participation, interweaving them into the full user experience.
I am a designer. I create interactive experiences through the use of visuals, an understanding of the way people want to interact, and a knowledge of the hook in film and other entertainment experiences.
